EMMA DONOVAN AND THE PUTBACKS + KEE’AHN
+ THE SLINGERS
FRIDAY 12 AUGUST 8PM - The Mech Hall
In an era when the world is falling apart with such a deafening roar, Cash Savage’s voice rings loud over the cacophony. Songs of politics, grief, songs of rage - this is weighty music that cuts through the noise. Savage’s band The Last Drinks are a powerhouse of fierce and brooding energy, every bit as committed to her songs and message. Every performance by this band is as epic as it is honest, raw and human.

"Donovan can front a well-oiled soul band in her sleep” – Rolling Stone AU

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Our second Winter Wild artist in residence, Bridget Chappell (aka Hextape) is an artist trying to contextualise a lot of trespass and nostalgia through raves, dance music, custom sound systems, pirate radio stations, poetry, contemporary and classical cello, doom metal, podcasts, and essays. Their albums ‘2 Fast 2 Furious’ (Anterograde, 2019) and ‘Undertow’ (Heavy Machinery Records, 2020) received critical acclaim. Chappell is an artist larping as a scientist; data sonification, 3D sound modelling, live coding, siren phase cancellation, etc. Chappell is the founder of the award-winning Sound School (Narrm\Melbourne), current co-director of artist-run initiative Watch This Space (Mparntwe\Alice Springs), and tries to leave a trail of rave breadcrumbs wherever they go.
Project Summary
During my Winter Wild residency with The Development Lab I’ll be using the Arts Inc. gallery as a space to produce my new album, which explores the musicality of MRI scans and their relationship to raves and oral culture. Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanners create incredible sounds while they work, that cannot be recorded – like a microwave, the machines do not accept metal. It’s a rave for one, that you cannot dance or listen back to – you just have to lie there in the tube and, hopefully, enjoy it.
Ill at ease in an often injured body trying to lead a “full life”, I’ve become kind of obsessed with MRIs, and look forward to them during treatment processes. Their ephemeral music challenges our screenshot-trigger fingered, archival-obsessed mode of experiencing the world that has made our capacity for memorisation go slack. If I want to re-live an MRI scan and the techno its magnets generate from hitting my own body, it’s asking me to relearn an oral tradition.
The Melbourne Brain Centre has kindly agreed to take me on as a visiting artist, where I’ll be able to learn more about MRI machines and their music as both a subject and researcher. Immediately thereafter I’ll travel to my residency in Apollo Bay to record these recitations and craft them into an album using electronic hardware, Ableton Live, and cello. Through this, I hope I can communicate some of the magic of MRIs to those who haven’t had to get one.

Contentious buffet
SATURDAY 13 August 12:30pm - Apollo Bay Community Hall
Part-performance lecture, part-intervention, part-lunch - Contentious Buffet is an experimental community hall buffet investigating food neophobia, bugs in popular culture (think Bugs Bunny, Jiminy Cricket, The Beatles, Y2k) and low carbon alternatives to food consumption.
Bringing together local Otways producers alongside some of Melbourne’s most experimental artists, food designers and thinkers, this event will get you thinking about how it was that Apollo Bay’s famous rock lobster shifted from being a ‘sea cockroach’ into one of the world’s most expensive and sought after delicacies.
Fusing APHIDS’ future-focused politics with Long Prawn’s divergent food thinking, the result is an unpredictable and invigorating afternoon of performance, participation and surprising bug-snacks.
Each ticket includes:
A special door prize
Tea, snacks and a hot lunch by Furrmien
It's not a bug, it's a feature performance lecture by Catherine Ryan
Waggle Dance - A multi-anthropod video assemblage by Sarah Aiken
Food Muses, Neophobia & Entomophagy presentation by Quiggi
Cooking prawns of the sky workshop by Long Prawn

THE DOGWATCH PART-1
SATURDAY 13 AUGUST 6PM - Festival Brazier
At the throbbing heart of WinterWild is fire. And nothing embraces, sculpts, worships and glorifies fire quite like The DogWatch. This is the event that the festival begins and ends with - that defines it, energises it, enflames it.
This year’s theme centres around the Sirens - those mythical creatures, half-woman, half-bird with an irresistibly haunting song that lures sailors on to the rocks of their island piled with bones.
The DogWatch will once again be directed by Roderick Poole, a veteran of outdoor spectacle, his works having been performed in over 40 countries. He will collaborate with Eloise Wood and WildHoney Performing Arts, along with a horde of local artists, performers, dancers, musicians and Apollo Bay stalwarts. This will be a passionate, eerie performance that goes to the dark heart of Apollo Bay.
This event is assisted by Creative Victoria + Regional Arts Victoria + the Australian Government’s Festivals Australia
AMYL & THE SNIFFERS + ORB + FLOODLIGHTS + LOCALLES
SATURDAY 13 AUGUST 8PM - Apollo Bay Distillery Outdoor Space
Fresh from shows at Glastonbury, Coachella and Royal Albert Hall, Aussie Punk icons Amyl and the Sniffers head down the coast to play in Apollo Bay for WinterWild festival 2022.
Not since the likes of AC/DC playing the local Leisure Centre in the 70s, have we seen a gig this big hit town.
Supports on the night come from fuzz lords ORB who play their first show in two years and jangle-pop rockers Floodlights.
This event is assisted by On the Road Again, a Victorian Government initiative to bring live music back across the state.

Yep! formed early last year when Apollo Bay locals Ella Summers and Seamus Fillmore self-recorded the sparse and peaceful ’10 Minutes of Yep!’ EP, a collection of sweet folk songs and ambient interludes. Since then they have been joined by cellist Xiao Xiao and pianist Lachie Smith, finding and creating new sounds and experiences.
Liz is a nature, ocean and music lover, passionate about sharing the life affirming practices of traditional Hatha Yoga. This session will combine a gentle flow of movement with the vibrational rhythms of the music to optimise a meditative and deep healing experience.

Strange kind of future - Australian nightmaRe
FRIDAY 26 AUGUST 8PM - Apollo Bay Community Hall
Strange Kind Of Future is a new way of examining how we value entertainment. Developed in the midst of lockdowns and uncertainty about the future of music, collaborators Oscar Galt and Matt Bourke pivoted another project to create a new vision for how a band could exist and function. Cut to “Australian Nightmare”, a horror themed record loaded with musical collaborators including Alison Thom(Howlite), Bec Goring and Hollie Joyce.
An animation, inspired by each song, accompanies the song's live performance. The result is something that cannot be achieved by a single individual, but only the strength of a vibrant and flourishing artistic community.
Strange Kind Of Future’s “Australian Nightmare” isn’t simply a band, it’s an exhibition.

LEAH SENIOR + SID O’NEIL
SATURDAY 27 AUGUST 8PM - Apollo Bay Our Lady Star of the Sea Church
Two intimate performances from Leah Senior and Apollo Bay’s own Sid O’Neil
Leah Senior silences audiences with her ethereal vocals and vivid lyricism. Hailed by critics as a divine masterpiece, her latest album The Passing Scene is a charming expansion on her previous two records lilting between springtime baroque-pop and 70's folk. The Passing Scene effortlessly weaves together themes of impermanence, the natural world, loss and ultimately hope. Leah Senior’s vocals have the clarity of British folk diviner Sandy Denny whilst her songwriting style ranges from contemplative folk to a playfulness likened to Paul McCartney.
Sid O'Neil is a person who plays guitar and piano and sings. He has his first-ever highly anticipated solo album coming out. He plays all of the instruments on it apart from some synthesizer and sampler by Mikey Young.

An incredible tale of survival told in song, Marching in Your Sleep describes the decade long journey a boy takes embarking with his sole possession, a harmonica. In a search for his brother, he encounters the harsh realities of armed conflict and cold war. Written by Andrew Vincent Melzak, the narrative set in 1940s Eastern Europe covers the remarkable events in the life of a young man whose gift for music changes his whole destiny. This new work compiles a backdrop of historical footage to retell a story that no longer has a living voice.
‘Vini’ Melzak delivers a 50-minute performance combining live instrumentation and vocals with an original soundtrack and archival photographs. He envelopes the audience in a multi-layered song-scape with mesmerising results.
