ABOUT APOLLO BAY
Apollo Bay is a small seaside town located half way along Victoria’s spectacular Great Ocean Road.
Perched at the foot of the Otway Ranges, the town was first populated by the indigenous Gadubanud people who lived off the fish, shellfish and vegetables of the coastline and hinterlands for thousands of years.
In the 1840s European settlers established a whaling station in the town, and it grew to become an important port. Accessible only by sea, the town went on to develop a rich fishing heritage over its years. The upgrade of the Great Ocean Road in 1932 opened the region up to tourism.
Today, fishing remains one of Apollo Bay’s major industries. With its pristine waters and abundant sea life, the town boasts the only operating fishing port along the Great Ocean Road, and one of Victoria’s few remaining fishing co-operatives.
